Women & Golf Bermuda Trophy

The sixth Women & Golf Bermuda Trophy took place last month at Port Royal Golf Club. Forty women golfers representing 23 golf clubs arrived on the beautiful island for what proved to be a fabulous week of golf and lots of fun on and off the course.

The Bermuda Trophy was once again hosted and run by former LET player Christine Langford who was also on hand to offer coaching and encouragement.

Day one of the championship brought near perfect weather conditions. Anita Tullett (Langley Park, Kent) posted an early lead with 35 points but was pipped by Jan Scott (Kingswood, Surrey) who topped the leaderboard by one point with 36 points.

After a well-deserved day off round two got underway. The wind had picked up and provided some tricky playing conditions, particularly on the huge and fast Port Royal greens. Nairn’s Susan MacVicar, a 10 handicapper and perhaps no stranger to windy conditions, carded a more than respectable 32 points to elevate her to joint second place with Shirley Darrah (Aspley Guise, Beds) who also had 32 points. An exceptionally fine score of 36 points saw 6 handicapper Ailsa Fraser (Army Club, Hants) leapfrog her way to a one point lead going into the final round.

Susan MacVicar led by a point and with Ailsa a further 3 points behind after the 13th hole it looked like the Scot had it in the bag, however, Ailsa played a magnificent final 5 holes, making two birdies, including one at the 14th, the hardest hole on the course, to amass 13 points and snatch victory by 2 points from Susan. Kate Gregory (Highpost) came third with a final round of 35 points, while Kjersti Simonsen from Norway, Shirley Darrah and Jan Scott shared fourth place.

Ailsa won the tournament in 2013 and was runner-up in 2014 so she certainly has the measure of Port Royal! As well as wining the coveted Women & Golf Bermuda Trophy, she received a beautiful ETIQUS timepiece and a pair of G-FORE golf shoes.
