Girls Golf Holiday

As new research reveals that girls’ holidays make you happier (yep, it’s true!) Naga Munchetty tells Women & Golf why she initially had her doubts.

By Charlotte Ibbetson

Confession time: I’ve never been on an all-female golfing holiday. Beach (and often boozy) getaways with the girls, city breaks and hen dos yes, but never golfing. It wouldn’t be fair to say it’s something I’ve avoided, I just can’t say it’s ever been particularly high up on my holiday wish list.

Then this week, I came across two articles that made me think otherwise. First is Naga Munchetty’s column in the next issue of Women & Golf. Like, her I guess I’ve always had my reservations as to how enjoyable it would all actually be. As Naga put it: “It was either going to go really well as we are all women in the same industry with similar attitudes to life, or the clash of big, strong personalities was going to be explosive … But I can honestly say it was one of the best breaks I have ever had.”

“I think I have underestimated other women. I was going through a bit of an emotional time when we were away and not once was I made to feel that I was too needy, self-centred or over-dramatic. In fact, I was completely and utterly held safe by these three fabulous women.”

“It didn’t stop us also ripping shreds out of each other on the course when we hit bad shots, or in the post-game analysis in the bar or restaurant, but we had each other’s backs. We still do.”

“Friendships for life were cemented on that mini-break, and we’re planning the next one as I write.”

“Bring on the mischief, the craic and the love. I suggest you try it, you never know, like me you may be pleasantly surprised.”

As if I needed any more convincing, I then read a piece by Cosmopolitan magazine (please don’t judge me – everyone needs a break from Brexit) that explained that there's genuine evidence to prove a girls' holiday makes you happier. The research by social-personality psychologist, Dr William Chopik, shows that a getaway with the girls is “imperative for improving our happiness and having a positive impact on our health.”
