The shocking mugshot taken after he was picked up by the Police in the early hours of Monday morning, which has now been shared around the world, paints a sad picture of the man once idolised by many.
Sad because such a private figure could be derided in such a public manner. Sad because someone who revolutionised the game with his legendary athleticism could be found in such poor condition. But perhaps more than anything else, sad because someone who has brought so much joy to the golfing world could be reduced to ridicule.
For some, Tiger’s fall will provide a warning that nobody, however rich or successful, is untouchable, others a stark reminder of the risk top sportspeople face when they step away from their respective sport or pass their peak.
Either way, it’s hard to recognise the man whose brilliance galvanised a new generation to take up the sport, with the man pictured in that mugshot.
Moreover, for all his prior sins, be it his extra-marital affairs or the arrogant manner with which he often conducted himself, before we revel in his fall its worth remembering that this is a figure who changed the face of the sport.
The incident, in which Tiger is said to have been asleep behind his steering wheel with the car still running, comes only weeks after he vowed to return to the game following successful back surgery.
The DUI probable cause affidavit, read: “Woods stated that he was coming from LA California from golfing. Woods stated that he did not know where he was. Takes several prescriptions.''
In a statement released by Woods earlier he placed the blame on several medications he takes to cope with his various injury problems.
“I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions. I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved. What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn’t realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.’’
