As the next edition of Women & Golf hits the shelves this Friday, here’s a sneak preview of what you can expect when our columnist Lewine Mair interviewed Faye Slattery.
From the outside, the life of a wife whose partner has made it on to the European Tour would seem to be pretty glamorous. After all, those in the top 100 on the 2018 Race to Dubai were pocketing anything between the €5 million plus of the No 1, Tommy Fleetwood, to the €390,000 or thereabouts of Denmark’s Lasse Jensen in 100th place.
Of course, there will be great days for the women when their menfolk are shooting up the leaderboard and they are able to relax behind the ropes and enjoy the journey. But on the other side of the coin, there will be some perfectly hideous times; times to have them wondering why on earth they didn’t choose to stay at home with family and friends.
For Faye Slattery, whose three-year spell as chairman of the wives’ group came to an end a few months ago, the darker days came at the start of her tournament sorties. Though you might struggle to guess at this, they were all about loneliness.
