Do you steer clear of red golf tees, stick with a golf ball which has offered up a rare birdie, or ensure you wear your lucky outfit come competition day?

If so, it’s likely that you’re not alone, with golfers appearing to be among the most superstitious people on the planet. Gary Player once said that the more he practised the luckier he got, but it appears that even the best golfers don't rest on their laurels, helping pave the way to good fortune with a number of bizarre superstitions. We picked out some of the most weird and wonderful.

Tiger Woods

Without doubt the most well-known superstition in golf. Tiger Woods has worn 'victory red' since he was a junior golfer and with over 80 professional victories to his name it's hard to argue against its success. The trait is said to have been started by his mother, who believes that the colour represents power.

Christina Kim

One of the biggest personalities on tour, it's little surprise that the American has an unusual superstition- she refuses to step on the cut line between the fairway and the green, believing that to do so will curse her round!

Jack Nicklaus

Another golfer who has certainly not been hampered by his superstitions. Nicklaus is a strong believer in the power of threes, and can always be found with three coins jiggling in his pocket. The Golden Bear is far from the only golfer who maintains that the number 3 is lucky. The 1973 Open winner Tom Weiskoff not only played with three coins but also three tees in his pocket. Perhaps three is a lucky number after all...

Sophie Keech

The young English professional has one of the oddest superstitions- she must always wear odd socks on the golf course!

Paula Creamer

Another golfer known for being peculiar about her attire on Sunday. The 'Pink Panther' will always where the colour pink during her final round.

Ernie Els

Throws away golf balls that he’s scored a birdie with, as he believes the ball’s luck has been used up. Considering he's extensive career, that's a hell of a lot of golf balls.

Holly Clyburn

The Englishwoman must have two ball markers in her pocket – a large chip and a small American coin. She also believes number 4 balls are unlucky.

Tyrrell Hatton

The rising English star believes that he will make a bogey on the next hole if he marks his card and so will often go half a round without recording his score. Perhaps don't try this one at home.

Anna Nordqvist

The Swede is a meticulous planner and believes that she need hit every club in her bag during her warm up to have a good round.
