Superhero Ace helps two junior golfers navigate their way around the course while the Penalty Monster tries to stop them. Is this be the best way to teach kids the rules EVER?
The rule book for children, Kids Golf Rules, is a brilliant, totally fun and engaging way for children to learn the otherwise complicated rules of golf. The idea behind Kids Golf Rules is to help children to transition from driving range novices to confident competitive golfers, and we think it's a fantastic idea. In fact, there are probably a lot of adults who'd benefit from reading it too!
We caught up with the masterminds behind the book, avid golfers and Hertfordshire super-mums Sarah and Janine, to find out more...
Janine and I are both really keen golfers. We both play off five, play at Essendon Country Club and play county golf. Between us, we have five children, all of whom play golf to varying levels, and our husbands also play. So you can see, golf is a big part of our lives!
The inspiration for the book was our two sons: Nick (my son, now aged 10) and Alex (Janine's middle son, now aged 14). A few years back they were just starting their golf journeys and were involved in junior coaching programmes at Essendon. As they started to play more competitively, it was clear that they needed to learn the rules. I wanted to create something really simple for them, and fun, and so I drew a little booklet with a superhero and a monster who wanted to stop them from learning the rules. I gave a copy of this to Alex.
Janine loved the book. She showed it to her youngest son, Daniel, who like Nick was seven at the time. Although he wasn’t as keen on golf as Nick and Alex, he loved the book and it got him interested too. In fact, all of the juniors loved it and so we thought we should create something a bit better to help them. It was then announced that in January 2019 the rules would be changing, and so we decided to create an easy, jargon-free rule book for juniors.
Our aim was to create a really fun, visually engaging book for juniors who are keen to learn golf. If they want to play in competitions, they need to know the rules and so we wanted to make sure that they had a guide which would be easy to understand and thus give them confidence on the course. We think we’ve achieved this.
