Golfers are increasingly undergoing laser eye surgery as a means of improving their eyesight, and their game. We spoke to LET player Becky Brewerton about the procedure.
We all know that golf is a game of small margins. Winning and losing can be decided by a mere putt, a few yards can be the difference between a perfect lie and finding yourself in an unplayable position.
Now golfers are going to ever greater lengths in pursuit of excellence. Rory McIlroy hit the headlines at the end of last year after tweeting a picture of himself shortly after undergoing laser eye surgery. He joins a long list of players including Tiger Woods and Retief Goosen who have sought to improve their game, and their eyesight, through the procedure.
It’s not hard to see why. The reportedly painless treatment takes only a few seconds and a patient can, on many occasions, go from poor sight to 20/20 vision.
Sounds too good to be true? Apparently not.
Ladies European Tour professional Becky Brewerton underwent the surgery in 2013 and has remarked on its game-changing impact.
'’The results were instant, as soon as I was back in the holding room, although my eyes were a bit cloudy I instantly could see everything.
I could read every line on the eye test board, it was an incredible feeling. It was literally like a whole new way of seeing the world.’’
For Brewerton the best results can be found on the greens.
''I used to struggle reading slopes before but now I can see it very clearly. When I got back to my house after having my eyes done it was the first time I'd ever noticed that the pavement to my front door is actually a bit downhill!''
But can your eyesight really make that much difference to your game? Well, yes. It’s hard to pinpoint an area of the game that isn’t dependent on good eye skills, especially around the greens. For those who wear contacts green reading becomes the least of their worries when poor weather sets in. For the amateur this is an annoyance. For the professional it can make a far greater impact.
It might be a while before we’re all rushing down to the clinic in the hope of shaving a few shots off our medal score. The procedure is expensive and anyway this is our eyes we’re talking about after all. Still for the professionals, when there are thousands of pounds on the line, small margins can make a big difference.
