Three Women & Golf competition winners had the chance to visit PING’s National Fitting Centre at Thonock Park Golf Club in Lincs for a custom-fitting experience. Find out how it went…
The process of custom-fitting golf equipment isn’t new; in fact it was introduced by PING over 45 years ago. However, it has taken several years for amateur golfers to recognise the misconceptions - it is a service for golfers of all abilities and not just for elite players and professionals, and it’s not an expensive way to buy golf equipment.
As far as female golfers are concerned, more and more are beginning to understand the real benefits of having a set of made to measure clubs.
Women often feel anxious and intimidated when they first take up the game, they don't act as confidently as men, so therefore they are unlikely to want to entertain a fitting session through fear of embarrassment. This can also be said for more experienced players, but all these ladies are missing out!
Whilst the clubs in PING’s G Le series are designed for ladies, PING fits to ability and not to gender. There are many different combinations of clubheads and shafts/flex and the lucky winners, Jane Fawcett, Lizzie Wood and Joanne Smith, are proof that due to their shape, size and ability, there is never one club that fits all.
Each lady was taken through the four-step process; Interview Process, Static Fitting, Dynamic Swing Test and Ball Flight Analysis.
Women & Golf will follow their progress, but here are their comments on what they all described as a thoroughly enjoyable day.
Jane Fawcett
Handicap: 13
Golf Club: Low Laithes, Wakefield
“I now have a set of clubs that overlap nicely for every distance and this will definitely give me more confidence,”said Jane, who was impressed by how much technology has moved on since she was last fitted for PING irons six years ago.
“My fitter, Matt, was so knowledgeable and it’s so good to know how far you hit each club and have them fitted for you rather than purchase off the shelf.”

“We’re all different shapes and sizes, even down to the size of your hand, so whether you’re a beginner or a better player, having clubs made to suit you and your swing can make a real difference to your game. The fitters are brilliant, spending quality time, and it’s great to have the opportunity to try so many different club combinations, hitting as many shots as you like.”

Joanne Smith
Handicap: 27
Golf Club: Ely, Cambridgeshire
“The length of club is similar to what I’m currently using, but I really like the lighter shaft in the PING clubs. They were easier to swing and the chart showed that I generated more distance, so a real confidence booster.”
“It’s just as important for a beginner because having the right set of clubs from the start will ultimately help you to play better and therefore you’ll want to play more.”
