Naga Munchetty On Clubs Encouraging Golf

Women & Golf columnist, Naga Munchetty, is impressed by what a club is doing to encourage women and girls into the sport, focusing on The Machrie Links on the Isle of Islay.

As the next edition of Women & Golf is on the shelves tomorrow, here’s a sneak preview of what you can expect from columnist Naga Munchetty this month.

I’ve never made any secret of the fact that I despair when I hear of so many golf clubs refusing to do more to welcome new members, encourage new players to take part in competitions, or of players who refuse to play with those who aren’t “good enough” golfers.

So when I visited The Machrie Links, on the Isle of Islay, I was so surprised to hear about what the Head Pro, David Foley, is doing to encourage particularly women and girls into golf.

However, when David’s face really lit up, was when he told me about the programme he has for introducing new players, getting those who had never held a golf club or stepped foot into a golf club to the stage of being confident enough to play without being intimidated. The idea of golf being for ALL.

For women new to golf, they are offered a 6-week tuition course and if they like it, they’ re offered a significantly reduced membership at the club, in other words, they’re given the opportunity to really let golf become part of their lives.
