Dame Laura Davies Does the Double
In the first year that there have been two majors on the Senior LPGA Tour, Dame Laura Davies won them both. Her first major came in Chicago in July, when she trounced the field to win the U.S. Senior Women’s Open by ten clear shots. Her next victory at the Senior LPGA Championship came much closer to the wire. Levelled with Helen Alfredsson and Silvia Cavalleri after the first nine of the final round, Davies powered through the back nine to win by four shots.
We also found out in November that European Captain Catriona Matthew had completed her backroom staff by naming Dame Laura Davies as a Vice Captain for The 2019 Solheim Cup at The Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, Scotland, on September 13-15.
England Golf Shakes up the Game
Giving golf a much-needed refresher, and more modern image, the England Golf relaunched their Get Into Golf initiative with bright colours, casual clothing, and the thumbs-up from various social influencers. Focused on inspiring people to give golf a go, the campaign showcased golf as a fun, friendly, and welcoming sport, regardless of ability, age, or gender.
Complete Drama at the US Women’s Open
With a seven-shot lead on the back nine at the final round of the US Women’s Open, Ariya Jutanugarn appeared to have her second major title sewn up. Oh, how wrong we were. In a twist of events, Jutanugarn was forced into a play-off with Hyo-Joo Kim after a triple bogey to start her closing nine holes and back-to-back bogeys to end it. Four playoff holes later, Jutanugarn claimed the title after getting up and down from a greenside bunker on the 18th.
The Coronation Foursomes Celebrates 65 Years
Over 25,000 women and girl golfers from over 1,100 clubs took part in this year’s Coronation Foursomes as the event celebrated its 65th anniversary. Local competitions were organised by clubs across Great Britain and Ireland before the top 16 teams booked their trip to St Andrews for the finale. Played over the Eden Course, Whittlebury Park pair Ann Lester and Christina Hancock sealed the win with 38 points, two points ahead of Norma Hughes and Julia Line from Llanymynech. Vicky Corner and Lilian Allison took third place with 34 points.
