Dundonald links, inspiring the next generation of golfers.

Since opening in 2003, Dundonald Links, a host venue for European Tour and Ladies European Tour events, has established itself as a must-play course, and this Ayrshire links also prides itself on environmental practices, for which it has received several awards.

But that’s not all, as another focus is to encourage the next generation of golfers.

In 2016 Dundonald Links’ Links to Golf initiative was created as a community outreach programme by the club’s professional staff to encourage more children to get into golf. Community outreach is a key area for the club and is a core part of their sustainable management plan.

Being part of the community is something that is incredibly important to Dundonald Links and one of the main reasons the club reached out to local schools, allowing young people to have access to green spaces and an introduction to the game.

The initiative runs alongside school time for two hours, supports the Curriculum for Excellence and is a fantastic way of keeping children active and healthy.

In 2018, 700 school children took part in Links to Golf from the primary learning age of three to seven years. The key stakeholders involved are Dundonald Links, North Ayrshire Active Schools and North Ayrshire Primary Schools.

Ian Ferguson, Club Manager said, “Fitness, physical activity and access to green space whilst delivering education, sums up Links to Golf at Dundonald Links. We are proud to be helping to deliver this now well established 'Growing the Game' programme in partnership with North Ayrshire Active Schools.”

“Recognising the need, then acting on delivering high-quality teaching to the younger generation in our community is what Dundonald Links does well. Our dedicated Golf Operations team have provided tutorials in a fun, vibrant outdoor classroom setting, with a long term view that some, if not all of these children will take up our great game.”

“Greater participation is what's needed to secure golf's future and where better to start than in our own respective clubs.”

Dundonald Links’ initiative fitted nicely as a legacy for the Ladies Scottish Open and Scottish Open, with children’s tuition featured throughout the tournaments.

To add more fun to the outreach programme, a competition was launched recently to design a flag for the golf course. It will remain a feature on the 18thgreen throughout the season, meaning that the youngsters can really leave a lasting impression!
