Emerging as a precocious teenager at a time when golf was considered neither sexy or cool, Michelle Wie has transformed the golfing landscape with her trendy outfits.

Michelle Wie has been instrumental in changing the golfing landscape over the past decade.

Emerging as a precocious fourteen-year-old at a time when golf was considered neither sexy or cool, the Hawaiian star has transformed the way that golf is perceived, particularly among the younger generation, and while her golf has not always lived up to her early promise, her status as an icon and role model has remained steadfast throughout her career.

Controversy

Never too far from controversy Wie has made a point of treading her own path in the game, not always to the delight of tournament organisers and the more traditional golf fans. At no time was this more apparent than following the announcement that a stricter dress code would come into force on the LPGA this summer, with the Nike Racerback tops that had become synonymous with the 6ft star among the items banned from the fairways.

Unsurprisingly Wie took it all in her stride, continuing to look fabulous as she bounced back from an appendicitis to crown her best season to date since her major winning year in 2014, finishing in T6 at the curtain-raising CME Group Tour Championship.

The Racerback tops are far from the only incident where her fashion choices have drawn criticism. In 2004 when Wie was bursting onto the scene she provoked controversy with her tight-fitting and unconventional outfits. No more so than at Evian Championship where the sleeveless black shirt she donned was perceived as inappropriate by many in the golfing fraternity.

Even in the following years, where Wie courted enough controversy to last an entire career, she continued to be the most iconic figure in the game, and following her multi-million pound deal with current sponsor Nike, would use this profile to help attract a new audience to the game.

Solheim Cup

It has been a fantastic year for Michelle Wie, with the American emerging from a dire season in 2016, in which she dropped to 105th on the LPGA Money List, to earn her spot on the US Solheim Cup team.

Always an event where she has shone, both on and off the fairways, it looked inevitable that she would miss out a spot in the team in the first time in her career after her putting deserted her, perhaps partly due to her unconventional table-top putting stance.

After apparently taking to google in a bid to cure her putting woes, her game appeared completely transformed during the early part of this year, capped by a T-3rd finish at the Ricoh Women's British Open, her highest finish since playing the event as an amateur.

Never scared to turn heads on the course, she would wear her custom made star-spangled, Swarovski crystal-encrusted Nike high-tops on the practice days at Des Moines Golf Club in celebration.

They may have been deemed a bit too much for tournament play, but that didn't stop her from looking fabulous, even if she did accidently wear the wrong outfit as she formed a winning combination with the Danielle Kang on the opening day foursomes.
