Golf came third in a new survey that looked at how long people continue doing a sport once they take it up.

Golf has got all of us totally hooked, and it seems like we're not alone in our addiction to the game.

GolfSupport.com surveyed 6,435 participants asking them which sports they have taken up in the past and how many weeks they maintained their training in that discipline.

Golf comes up top

Golf came third in their list of sports that people stick at longest, with only yoga and football generating greater longevity.

On average, the subjects asked gave up yoga after 40 weeks, football after 39 and golf after 37.

Boxing, not so much...

On the other end of spectrum, the data showed that people gave up on boxing, shinty (a twelve aside game originating in Scotland) and dance the quickest. With the average time people kept up boxing coming out as four weeks.

Experts working with the online golf retailer advised that when taking on a new sport, you should train three times a week for six months (26 weeks) in order to reach amateur level.

The study found that 61 percent of people gave up on a sport before reaching amateur level, with the main reasons for this being lack of motivation and lack of time.
