If you thought there was enough birdies at Aldeburgh Golf Club to keep even the most cunning feline mind amused, you'd be mistaken.

Merlin, a two-year-old Burmese cat, has become such a plague to golfers at this Suffolk club that the membership has been forced to introduce a new local rule which permits them to replace their ball if they fall foul to his sticky-pawed antics. Known to prowl the 14th fairway, ready to pounce on unsuspecting golfer’s balls as they come to rest, Merlin’s mischievous ways have grown so out of hand that the club has been forced to apply to the R&A so that members can take into account abnormal ground conditions, if there ball is to be taken by this furry thief.

According to his owners Peter Bryson, 67, and his wife Sara, 54, who live 100 yards away from the club, Merlin has been known to collect as many as six balls in one day.

It’s thought the members said enough after Merlin struck repeatedly during a competition.

Club PA Melissa Baker, who spoke to the Daily Mail, said: 'Most (members) take it in good humour but others have taken it more seriously.'
