The race for the Solheim Cup has intensified this week, with European Captain Annika Sorenstam heading to the inaugural Estrella Damm Mediteranian Open in a bid to unearth the best that Europe has to offer.
Among the players looking to impress are a host of British hopefuls who will be trying to book their place on the plane to Iowa this August. We take a look at the players hoping to shine this week under the gaze of the Swede.
Georgia Hall
Dorset’s Georgia Hall burst onto the scene last year with a string of good performances on the Ladies European Tour, eventually finishing fourth on the LET Order of Merit. Hall posted eight top 10 finishes from 15 tournaments last year and has continued in the same vein this season, with a top-5 placing last week in Morocco. She currently sits top of the LET Solheim Cup points list and will need not worry about a pick from Annika if she can continue her good form.
A former Junior Solheim Cup player, the Englishwoman rose the ranks playing alongside LPGA star Charley Hull, offering the potential for an extremely charismatic foursomes pairing!
Florentyna Parker
The Royal Birkdale player currently sits just outside the automatic Solheim Cup qualifying places, but will be hoping to change that with a good performance in Spain this week. Parker had her best year to date last year, after nearly a decade on tour, finishing 3rd on the LET Order of Merit with eight top-ten finishes. A multiple winner on tour, she represented the LET at the Queen's Cup in 2016 and will be hoping that the experience helps propel her into a spot in Annika's squad.
Annabel Dimmock
The Wentworth-based player may be an outsider for a slot in the European squad, but proved her worth last week in Morocco with a 3rd place finish. The twenty-year-old currently sits 17th on the European points list, but expressed her desire to make the team in an exclusive interview with us in December and will hoping to impress under Annika's watchful eye this week.
Mel Reid
Mel Reid got off to a flying start this season with victory at the Oates Vic Open, in Australia, and with a host of experience and two Solheim Cups under her belt must be among the favourites to make the squad. Reid considered giving up the game if she didn’t gain her LPGA card for this season. Nonetheless, she is back this side of the pond with the hope of securing her place in the team come August.
