Finding it hard to decide on a venue for an away-day or a weekend break with the girls? Women & Golf share the option of Parkstone Golf Club to help you decide.
You almost stumble by accident across Parkstone Golf Club, a private members’ club discreetly located in the residential area of Canford Cliffs, adjacent to Poole Harbour on Dorset’s Jurassic coast, and where the renowned Peter Alliss was the club pro for thirteen years. As you pull into the ample car park, you really have no idea of the treat that lies in store!
THE CLUBHOUSE
The modern clubhouse has a large, open-plan bar, lounge and dining area on the top floor with spectacular views from the terrace overlooking the 1st and 18th holes, and provides a first glimpse of what’s to come. Whether a buffet lunch or three-course meal is required, Parkstone’s catering staff are happy to help. And if you’re up for some retail therapy before you hit the fairways, the pro shop on the lower floor has an excellent range of women’s golf gear and accessories.
THE COURSE
The club occupies land designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and has worked together with Natural England and RSPB to find a balance between its conservation and the needs of the club. Hence the beautiful surroundings. Set amongst mature heathland and pine trees with lakes and views over Poole Harbour, the 5,576-yard course, host of this year’s European Ladies’ Open Championship in July, is one of the most attractive and enjoyable Women & Golf has played. Be sure to take in the view from the 8th tee-a great par-4, dog-leg left from an elevated tee - but watch out for all those sandy bits as you head towards the large green! The course is not overly long, but each hole has its own challenge. Tees are excellently tended and the raised greens also add to the enjoyment. It’s easily walkable but buggies would be advisable for those who prefer a more leisurely round.
ACCOMMODATION
Parkstone Golf Club is conveniently located a short distance between the vibrant town centres and beaches of Poole and Bournemouth. Each has plenty of hotels and B&Bs to choose from as well as some good restaurants and entertainment at Bournemouth’s International Centre and Pavilion Theatre for more fun if you decide to stay overnight.
FEMALE-FRIENDLY
It was refreshing to hear that women form almost 30% of Parkstone’s membership, without doubt testament to the time the club’s General Manager, Michael Sawicki, Head Pro, Martyn Thompson and Assistant Pro, Alice Davis, have given to grow the club’s already thriving women’s section. It also has the current Dorset County Ladies’ Champion, Scarlett Williams, amongst its membership and Georgia Hall, the current British Women’s Open Champion, is an Honorary member of the club.
Without doubt a fabulous course with a variety of holes in an area of outstanding natural beauty and worthy of its place in the Top 100 golf courses in Great Britain and Ireland. Situated close to amenities that will ensure your round of golf can be just part of a varied and pleasurable visit, it’s definitely a venue to add to your bucket list of places to play!
