Most of us will have woken up this morning to the news that Donald Trump will be the next president of the United States. The president elect may be a newbie when it comes to politics but he's no stranger to the golf course, reportedly playing off a 3-handicap and owning a portfolio of great courses. Nonetheless, Trump is far from the only American leader to have a sweet spot for the game. We take a take a look at some former golfing presidents.
William Taft
U.S president in the immediate years before World War One, Taft was the first golfer to openly admit to playing the sport. Before then golfers had kept their pastime secret because golf was considered a game for only the rich.
Woodrow Wilson
He may be more well-known for his role in setting up the League of Nations but Woodrow Wilson also holds the record for the most rounds of golf played by a president. He is reported to have played over 1,000 rounds, equivalent to one every other day.
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Among the keenest of the golfing presidents, Eisenhower played over 800 rounds throughout his terms and had a putting green built outside the Oval Office. Alongside Arnold Palmer he is credited with helping to popularise the game in America.
John F. Kennedy
John F. Kennedy is thought be one of the most talented golfers amongst the US presidents. He didn't play as much as some of his counterparts and struggled with a bad back but is said to have regularly broken 80.
Barack Obama
No president has received as much media attention for their golfing antics as Barack Obama. Thought to have played over 300 rounds whilst in office, it was recently unveiled, after years of secrecy, that he plays off a 13-handicap.
