Charley Hull is only 23-years-old, but she’s already a household name. With a new house and a wedding to plan, it’s a big year for the gifted player…

As the next edition of Women & Golf is on the shelves NOW, here’s a sneak preview of what you can expect from columnist Lewine Mair’s interview with Charley Hull this issue.

"Charley is Charley” is the way in which most of Charley Hull’s fans, including her father Dave, preface their latest update on the now 23-year-old player who first made a name for herself as a nine-year-old. 

Not too many will need any reminding of how she defeated a little matter of 24,500 women in the Ladies’ Golf Union’s 2005 Health Perception championship to win a place for herself in the pro-am ahead of the following year’s Women’s British championship at Sunningdale. (For the purposes of that championship week, she was a 10-year-old playing to the same 11 handicap as her doting dad, Dave.)

Charley was 17 when she turned professional and, when she tees up in the forthcoming AIG Women’s British Open over Woburn, her home course, it will be her eighth appearance in a championship which she wants to win above all the rest.

Since Charley is poised to get married to Ozzie Smith, a well-known boxer, on the Saturday after the Solheim Cup at Gleneagles, this is probably as good a moment as any to recall a couple of the never-to-be-forgotten events to have punctuated her career.

No one else, for example, has ever done as she did in reeling off five successive runner-up spots at the start of her rookie year on the LET. Then, when she was given a wild card for that summer’s Solheim Cup in Colorado, there was a ‘Charley moment’ to beat any other when she thumped the vastly more experienced Paula Creamer by 6&5 and promptly asked for the American’s autograph.

Creamer when she had had a few moments to recover from the cheek of it, obliged - and later suggested that it was the kind of thing she might have done when she was Charley’s age.

Charley’s career thus far boasts five top ten finishes in majors (these include a second in the ANA Inspiration of 2016) while she also has three tournament wins under her belt. Two in Europe and one - the CME - in America. 

Along the way, she has bagged in excess of three million dollars, most of which has gone on a splendid old home which happens to be conveniently placed next door to the church where 300 people will attend her wedding service ahead of a dinner for 500 in a marquee in her garden.
