Ailsa Fraser, a 6 handicapper and member of Army Golf Club in Hampshire, tells us about her experience as Women & Golf’s competition winner of a pro-am place at the AIG Women’s British Open.

Q: Tell us about your emotions on the day?

It was fabulous to be able to mix with the world’s top female golfers. Having attended several professional tournaments to watch the players in action, it felt very strange to be walking on the inside of the ropes, but I eventually managed to get used to this privilege.

Q: Your pro was LET rookie, Esther Henseleit, what did you learn from her?

Esther Henseleit has a lovely swing, exquisite ball striking and great composure. As I’m working on my backswing, trying to stop an over-swing, I noticed that hers was beautifully compact with a straight left arm. It was inspirational to watch how she managed to generate enormous power and length.

Q: How did you play?

Despite feeling so nervous before I stepped onto the 1^sttee, I was delighted to score 15 points on the front nine, however, the rain, the bunkers and the greens played havoc with my golf on the back nine and I did not score so well. My favourite hole on Woburn’s Marquess Course is the spectacular par-5 7th with a split fairway and I was delighted with a bogey there for two points!

Q: What were the highlights and forever memories?

I received a very generous goodie bag and the contents will always remind me of a fabulous golf day. The BBC’s Andrew Cotter hosted the dinner and he interviewed Catriona Matthew, Maria Fassi and Clare Balding, all of whom were very entertaining.

Andrew described golf as being “the only sport where you can compete on the same course and alongside the best in the world on an equal footing.” I certainly had a memorable day at Woburn and now I can appreciate more than ever how good these players are, and for me, they really are the best in the world.
