The Manor House Golf Club and its members have paid a lasting tribute to founder captains Roger Horler and Kirstie Maxwell by unveiling a new clock in their memory.

Roger, a former West Bromwich Albion footballer, and Kirstie were men’s and ladies’ captains at the Wiltshire venue in its first two years, 1992 and 1993, and continued to be members until they passed away earlier this year.

The clock, which is situated near to the first tee, was paid for by money raised by The Manor House’s membership, with the club paying for its plinth and a commemorative plaque, and the timepiece was unveiled by Roger and Kirstie’s widows, Kate Horler and Tim Maxwell, at a special remembrance ceremony.

Michael Spring-Rice, chief executive of the club when Roger and Kirstie were captains, said: “Kirstie was a stickler for golf etiquette and always extremely courteous. She was a role model captain and a hard act to follow. She laid sound foundations for the ladies’ section and, through numerous committee appointments over the last 20 years, she kept a sensitive hand on the tiller.

“Roger’s golf was amazing in those early days when most of us were losing numerous balls each round and his greatest claim to fame was to drive the first green on what is now our tenth hole.”

The Manor House Golf Club, which is set in 365 acres of stunning countryside near Castle Combe,  is owned by the Exclusive Golf group alongside Mannings Heath Golf Club in Horsham, West Sussex, with both venues featuring in the latest ‘Top 100 Golf Courses in England’ standings.

Andrew Ryan, golf operations and retail manager at The Manor House, an Exclusive Hotel & Golf Club, said: “Roger and Kirstie did so much for the club, especially in its formative years, and they will both be sadly missed.

“The clock is a fitting tribute and lasting memorial to all the hard work they put in to help The Manor House become one of the leading venues in the south-west.”

Exclusive Golf was formed in 2010 and is a part of Exclusive Hotels and Venues, a prestigious group of individual, stylish hotels in the south of England, located in stunning surroundings and presenting a luxurious tranquillity in beautiful English locations.
