The United States have won back the Solheim Cup with an incredible comeback this afternoon at Golf Club St Leon-Rot, Germany.

Trailing the European team 10-6 after the delayed completion of Saturday afternoon’s foursomes, the Americans won eight-and-a-half-points from a possible twelve to claim an unlikely victory. Koch’s Euroepan side looked on course to rewrite the record books and get their hands on the cup for the third time in succession, but an inspired performance by the American team ended the hopes of both the team and the crowds who came out in force this afternoon to cheer on the home side.

Whilst the European frontrunners continued to demonstrate the form that had enabled the team to attain such dominance, the continental pack behind was quickly crumpling in the face of an American onslaught. The fire seemed at least partially fanned by a controversial incident in this morning’s foursomes in which Suzann Petterson and Charley Hull claimed the crucial 17th against Alison Lee and Brittany Lincicome after Lee picked up her short putt before it was conceded.

‘After this morning they were all fired up,’ claimed American captain Christie Kerr.

This certainly seemed the case as one by one the scoreboard came to be dominated by red. Fuelled by the incident Alison Lee made a remarkably composed performance against Gwladys Nocera to claim a 3 & 1 victory.

The vocal home crowds were unable to assist their team in holding off the American charge, despite a notable performance by Anna Nordqvist who defeat world number three Stacy Lewis by two holes.

Many Americans will undoubtedly feel that Petterson received her just desserts when she fell victim to Angela Stanford 2 & 1, whilst Hull, who had come into her match this afternoon undefeated, was blown aside by a birdie blitz from Christie Kerr. Michelle Wie accordingly appeared unstoppable recording seven birdies to claim her match against Caroline Hedwall on the 14th.

With the final matches all heavily in American favour, Gerina Piller delivered the killer blow holing a 9-foot putt on the 18th to defeat Caroline Masson and secure victory for the American side.
