Tiger Woods has expressed his thanks after many of biggest stars in the men's game dressed in red and black in tribute to him at the first World Golf Championship event of the year in Florida.

Tiger said he felt touched by the many tributes payed to him at the WGC-Workday Championship in Florida on Sunday, after he was injured in a car crash last week.

The legendary golfer is famous for wearing a red shirt and black trousers on the final day of tournaments, and so many of the biggest stars in men's golf, including Jason Day, Tony Finau, Tommy Fleetwood, Sebastian Munoz, Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed donned their best red and black outfits at the weekend in honour of him.

“It is hard to explain how touching today was when I turned on the TV and saw all the red shirts,” Tiger tweeted.

“To every golfer and every fan, you are truly helping me get through this tough time.”

Tribute to Tiger

Rory, who finished T6, said he wanted the 45-year-old to know they were all thinking of him.

"I guess, for us, it's just a gesture to let him know that we're thinking about him and we're rooting for him," he said. "Obviously things are looking a little better today than they were on Tuesday, but he's still got a way to go. He's got a huge recovery ahead of him.

"But I think just for everyone to show their appreciation for what he means to us out here. If there was no Tiger Woods, I just think the Tour and the game of golf in general would be in a worse place. He's meant a lot to us, he still does mean a lot to us and I think that was just a little way to show that."

Even some of the caddies were wearing red and black too, while several volunteers were spotted with Tiger Woods masks on.

Meanwhile, over at the Puerto Rico Championship the grounds crew also wore red and black.

But still there was controversy...

But Max Homa, who was awarded his trophy at the Genesis Invitational by Tiger oly last week, has been receiving abuse on social media for saying that he wouldn't be wearing red and black for the final on Sunday.

Responding to the backlash he explained that he couldn't because of his sponsorship agreements.

“I mean this with zero hyperbole, this is the weirdest thing I’ve ever experienced on Twitter ,” he wrote.

“I love Tiger more than u guys. Promise. Listen to an interview from last week. Red and black tomorrow doesn’t prove that. A lifelong attempt to mimic his approach to the game does."

Woods has worn red and black on Sundays since his early days as a golfer. He said he had been inspired to do so by his mother, Tida. “I wear red on Sundays because my mom thinks that that’s my power colour. And you know you should always listen to your mom," he said.

He's not wrong!
