It’s not a usual occurance for Sung Hyun Park to display any emotion on the golf course, but her performance on Sunday resulting in an unsurprising emotion that showed us all exactly the ups and downs she’s been experiencing, much like the rollercoaster of her season so far.
The Korean player, ranked sixth in the world, defeated So Yeon Ryu and Nasa Hataoka on the second playoff hole, rolling in birdie putts on both to win her second major title and fourth LPGA career victory.
Hugging her caddie at the final playoff hole, Park showed an outpouring of emotion that we haven’t seen in her previous wins; she cried openly on his shoulders in a display of what we can only imagine is all the frustrations of three missed cuts in her last four tournaments pouring out.
On Sunday’s round, Park recorded the only bogey-free round of the day at Kemper Lakes Golf Club, signing for a 3-under par 69 to force a playoff. In fact, she didn’t make a single bogey on the back nine all week, rolling in a long birdie putt at the par 4 14th, chopping the ball out of knee-high grass for a par save at the 16th, and narrowly missing another birdie on the 18th.
Sung Hyun Park is just the third Korean to win the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, and joins a short list that includes two of the game’s greats in Pak and Inbee Park.
