Scot Catriona Matthew is in contention after the first day of the ANA Inspiration, the opening major of the year, after carding a four-under-par 68 at Rancho Mirage, California.

Her round of six birdies and two bogeys, leaves her one shot behind tied leaders Ai Miyazato of Japan and Spain's Azahara Munoz. Both Miyazato and Munoz are seeking their first career major titles.

Miyazato finished third at last week’s Kia Classic after making an adjustment to the lie on her putter. But for the former world No.1 her performance last week was just the first time her play this season matched her expectations.

“I’ve been feeling good about my game since the beginning of the season,” Miyazato said. “I said to myself just be patient until the scoring is going to be good. I had a good self talk since the beginning of the season, so I actually had have confidence since then.”

England's Charley Hull is three behind, alongside Michelle Wie and Lydia Ko, after a two-under par 70. Ko is in search of back to back major wins after victory in the Evian Championship last year.

Amateur Bronte Law is currently sitting on the projected cut line after one-over-par, whilst Ireland's Leona Maguire, the amateur world number one, sits two shots further back.
