Scotland’s Michele Thomson and Anne Van Dam of the Netherlands both carded 68's in the first round of the LET season finale in Spain yesterday to take the first round lead. They're tied at the top with England’s Liz Young who shot 3-under in her first nine holes before a waterlogged golf course halted the rest of the day's play.
Thomson, who is looking for her first LET win, set the tone from the start, making birdie on the 1st hole and following it up with further birdies on the 4th and 8th. She got into a bit of trouble on the 14th which resulted in a double bogey, but birdies at holes 15 and 16 steadied the ship for a level par back nine.
Van Dam's round was definitely one of two halves. A string of pars and one birdie on the front nine put her at 1-under par at the turn before making a bogey at the 10th. She responded with three consecutive birdies from the 13th to take her share of the lead.
Young, who is also in contention for her first title, started her round from the 10th and carded four bogeys and one birdie for a nine-hole score of 32.
England's Georgia Hall is close behind the pack at 2-under par through five holes, followed by compatriot Meghan MacLaren and Wales' Lydia Hall at 1-under.
With an afternoon of persistent rain, less than half of the field were able to complete their first round yesterday. As play resumes this morning, we could we see a big change at the top of the leaderboard, which would make for a very exciting end to the tours' season.
