The Paris 2024 Olympics kicks off with the Opening Ceremony today! Here's all you need to know about the Olympic golf competition, individual men's and women's events, taking place at Le Golf National.

This will be the fifth time that golf has featured in the Summer Olympic programme. It was first contested in 1900 (by both men and women) and then again 1904 (just by men). Golf then returned to the Olympic schedule at Rio 2016, where Inbee Park and Justin Rose won Gold and in the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics it was an American sweep with Nelly Korda and Xander Schauffele who grabbed the gold medals.

Now we're set for two weeks in Paris. Here's a guide for all you need to know for the 2024 Olympics - Golf competition.

Where is the Paris 2024 Olympics Golf Competition being held?

The Olympic golf competition will take place at the prestigious Albatros Course of Le Golf National in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, located 41 km from the Olympic Village. This well known venue is owned and managed by the French Golf Federation and has been a permanent home for the annual FedEx Open de France tournament.

Le Golf National opened on October 5, 1990 and was designed by Hubert Chesneau and Robert Von Hagge. The course was then renovated in 2016 by European Golf Design (EGD) under Chesneau’s supervision in preparation for the 2018 Ryder Cup.

What will the course set up be at Le Golf National?

The men’s Olympic golf competition will be played as a par-71 over 7,174 yards (6,557 metres), while the women’s Olympic golf competition will be a par-72 over 6,374 yards (5,829 metres).

When will the Olympic Golf competitions be taking place?

The Men’s Olympic golf competition will take place on Thursday, 1 August to Sunday, 4 August, whilst the Women’s Olympic golf Competition starts the following week on Wednesday, 7 August to Saturday, 10 August.

What is the competition format and field size for golf at the 2024 Olympics?

Both the men and women professional golfers will be competing over a normal 72 hole stroke play format. Unlike most tour events, there will not be a cut in the Olympic Golf competitions.

There will be 60 competitors in each event.

For the first two rounds, the players will be in three balls, with groups announced two days before the event. After 36 holes and for the final two rounds, groups will be based on cumulative scores, with the leaders teeing off last.

How are the golf competition fields determined for the Olympics?

The fields for both the men’s and women’s competitions are determined by world rankings. With the Top-15 world-ranked athletes all being eligible, but with a maximum of four athletes per country. Beyond the top-15, athletes are selected based on world rankings, with a limit of two per country if not already represented by two or more athletes in the top-15.

It is also worth noting that the host country and each of the five continents are guaranteed a spot.

What happens if the scores are tied in the Olympic golf competition?

In the event of a tie after 72 holes, a hole-by-hole play-off will determine the gold and silver medals.
For three or more athletes tied for first, a play-off will determine the gold, silver, and bronze medals.
If tied for second, a play-off will determine the silver and bronze medals. For ties for third place, a play-off will determine the bronze medal. There will only be one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal awarded.

As well as a gold medal, the men's gold medalist also receives:

  • Exemptions into all major championships during the 2025 season
  • Exemption into THE PLAYERS Championship 2025
  • Exemption into The Sentry 2025, if a PGA TOUR member at the time of victory
  • Official World Golf Ranking points

Whilst the women's gold medalist receives:

  • Exemptions into the 2024 AIG Women’s Open, 2025 Chevron Championship, 2025 U.S. Women’s Open, 2025 KPMG Women's PGA Championship, 2025 Amundi Evian Championship
  • One point towards the LPGA Hall of Fame
  • Rolex Women’s World Golf Ranking points

As well as their gold winner's medal.

How can I watch the Olympic Golf in Paris?

For those fans not travelling to France, the main broadcaster for Paris 2024 is Discovery+, they are the rights holder and will be every moment of the Olympic Games in the UK.

Across the Discovery+ app and Eurosport channels in the UK, more than 3,800 hours of live coverage will be aired in total from 07:00 to 22:30 BST each day.

Golf coverage will be available via the red button on BBC and Eurosport Channels from 8am until 5pm (local time) on all four days of the Olympic golf competitions.

What are the tee times for the men's Olympic golf competition?

The first round tees off at 8am local time on Thursday August 1 with France's Victor Perez, Germany's Matthias Schmid and Chinese Taipei's C.T. Pan.

Will there be a Mixed-Team Olympic golf competition?

The IGF has proposed adding a 36-hole mixed-team competition to the Olympic golf programme starting at the 2028 Olympics at The Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. This event would feature up to 16 teams playing one round of foursomes (alternate shot) and one round of four-ball (best ball), selected from the 60 men and 60 women already qualified for individual play.
