Going into Round 2 the English star is T3 and 5 under.

Mel Reid is on a roll this year.

She was one of the best performing Brits at the AIG Women's Open (she finished T39) and at the second major of the year, the ANA Inspiration, she secured a comfortable top 10 finish at T7.

But it's at the Portland Classic where she seems to have really gotten into the swing of things.

She played brilliantly in Round 1, carding a score of 67 including seven birdies, and finishing -5 at T3.

Going into Day 2 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club, Oregon, the other Brits are no where to be seen really, with Bronte Law next on the leaderboard at T39.

Today (September 19) also happens to be Mel's Birthday, and we've got our fingers crossed that she does just as well today as she celebrates turning 33.

Speaking after the first round, where the tournament that has been reduced to 54 holes due to risks from wildfires, Mel said:

"I'm feeling pretty good. Last week gave me a bunch of confidence.

"I've been working extremely hard the last kind of few months and consistently, and it's just nice to see a few good scores paying or for my hard work."

Holding theovernight lead was 2019 champion Hannah Green and America's Cydney Clanton with 66.

Australian Hannah had a one-stroke lead through 17 (!) of the holes and she only made a bogey on the 18th.

Clearly a woman on a mission she said:

“I missed quite a lot of greens compared to my score, so the only putt I really missed was the one on the last, so to say that it pretty good. That's what I hope that I can continue. I know they're a little bit bumpy this afternoon, so hopefully I can just keep rolling it well and they will actually drop.”

Many have been concerned about the standard of the air quality at the tournament due to the smokey conditions and fires that are still devastating West Coast USA. In fact we reported last week that two-time champ Brooke Henderson opted out over safety concerns.

The weather also caused some interruptions, with play suspended for 1.5 hours due to lightening in the afternoon and then suspended at 7.19pm due to darkness.

Today 20 players still need to finish their rounds.
