American Marina Alex claimed her first LPGA win after six years on tour at the Cambia Portland Classic this weekend, with Georgia Hall hot on her heels in second place.
After missing the cut last week at the CP Women’s Open, Marina Alex posted on social media, “luckily there’s next weekend.” And the 28-year-old was absolutely right to stay positive. Just one week later, Alex propelled herself ahead of the field at the Cambia Portland Classic, opening the tournament with a 10-under-par 62 and closing it with 65 (not before two steady 71’s on Friday and Saturday) to win the tournament by four shots ahead of England’s Georgia Hall.
Alex has been steadily improving during her six years on tour, and after a few top-3 finishes, this weekend marks her first, and very well-deserved, LPGA Tour win.
Hall played her way to the top of the leaderboard early on in the tournament with opening rounds of 66,63, and 69, leaving us wondering if she could repeat her dramatic win of the British Open. After a few errant shots in the final round though and with only one birdie to make up for them, Hall closed the tournament with a round of 75, finishing in second place and four shots behind Alex. Though a disappointing end for Hall, this is her best finish on the LPGA Tour, and we’re hoping a glimpse into more of what’s to come.
Ayako Uehara finished in third place at 13-under, Minjee Lee in fourth at 11-under, and Megan Khang just behind at 10-under. Out of the homegrown crop, Scotland's Gemma Dryburgh tied in a creditable 21st place with 8 other playes on 4-under including England's Jodi Ewart Shadoff. European Solheim Cup captain Catriona Matthew finished on 2-under par, Becky Morgan from Wales made the cut for an overall 3-over, whilst a poor final round left Englishwoman Charley Hull at the back of the field.
