Mexico's Gaby Lopez has become the first LPGA Tour player to test positive for COVID-19.

The player, who won the first LPGA event of the year, the Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions, has now been forced to withdraw from this week's Drive On Championship in Toledo, Ohio, where the Tour is due to resume after months of cancelled tournaments.

It was mandatory for every player hoping to compete at the Inverness Club to undergo a coronavirus test, and Gaby's was the only result to come out positive.

She is now self-isolating for ten days and said to be working with local health officials on contact tracing.

In a statement provided by the Tour, the 26-year-old said:

“I was very excited to get back to playing on Tour after this long break and while I’m disappointed that I’ll have to wait a little longer, I am glad that I was able to get tested and to make sure I do not put anyone else at risk. I am self-isolating and will be following all the CDC and LPGA guidelines to get back to competing on Tour in a safe manner. I’m feeling good and looking forward to when I can return to playing on Tour.”

She also took to social media to reassure her fans, posting on with Twitter with a heartfelt message. She said:

"I am currently feeling good and have only very mild symptoms. I wish everyone the best at this week's tournament."

The player, currently 44th in the world rankings, will complete another test after her isolation period is done. If that returns negative then she will be able to resume competing.

We wish her all the best and a speedy recovery.
