Lexi Thompson has withdrawn from next week’s Ricoh Women’s British Open as she wants to “recharge” her “mental batteries”.
In an Instagram post, the world No 5 said the past year and a half have taken a “tremendous toll” and “I realised recently that I need to take some time to work on myself.”
In April 2017 the 23-year-old American was left in tears after being penalised with a four-stroke penalty while leading the final round of the 2017 ANA Inspiration – a ruling that ultimately cost her a second major title and earlier this year Thompson said that she still has nightmares about the incident. Over the last 18 months she has also had to cope with her mother's cancer diagnosis and the passing of her grandmother.
Thompson’s last victory was at the Indy Women in Tech Championship last September and she hopes to defend her title that begins on 16 August.
