On her 22nd birthday, Minjee Lee has secured her fourth LPGA tour victory at the Volvik Championship this weekend. In a back-and-forth battle all day with I.K. Kim, Lee’s final round of the tournament got off to a quick start, making birdie at three of her first five holes.
Lee made a costly bogey on the par-4 17th hole, but bounced back with a final birdie at the 18th. After a slightly wayward approach shot managed to dodge a collection of trees on its way to the final green, Lee played a delicate chip shot that left her with a short birdie putt to win the tournament by one shot.
After winning twice in 2016, Lee has since gone through a winless draught, so Sunday’s victory was a welcome change and a confidence booster leading into the U.S. Women’s Open next week.
For I.K. Kim, it was a quite debut at the LPGA Volvik Championship, as she tied for the lead with Lee a handful of times throughout the final round before Lee eventually pulled away.
Kim shot a 5-under-par 67 on Saturday and Sunday of the championship.
Moriya Jutanugarn fell just two shots shy of her second win in four weeks, but heads into next week’s U.S. Women’s Open with a ton of confidence after tying for the round of the day Sunday alongside Karine Icher. Both players carded an impressive 7-under-par 65- Icher’s lowest round on the LPGA Tour since a 65 at the Bank of Hope Founders Cup in March 2017.
