The 27-year-old looked all set to be a golfing sensation as a teenager - and the first British Asian to dominate the game. Just four years after hitting a ball for the first time, Matharu was making her name in the Faldo Series, winning the 2005 event by a staggering 11 shots.
She turned professional in 2006 after taking the English Ladies Amateur Championship and went on to finish 15th in her first professional tournament. A year later she was making a serious impression on the LET tour, with a win and a collection of good finishes. Since then the Leeds pro admits she has struggled to fulfil her potential. But a new putter and some expert physiotherapy and Matharu is swinging better than she has in ten years.
“I have only played half the season because of injury problems,” she said. ''I had some treatment from Madhan Kumar Ramanathan, he is the physio for the Northamptonshire cricket team - and the results have been fantastic.''
“I have been struggling for years. But he treated my pelvis and now I am swinging the club better and with more freedom than I have in a long time. I am feeling great. And you can see the result in my scoring.”
Matharu came second in France and two weeks after that shot a 4-under round to finish joint third on -6 at the Stoke-by-Nayland LETAS event.
“The four under round could have been better,” she admitted. ''But suddenly I am playing much better thanks to the physio and the putter. The putter is a $1,000 model made by Kramski. I played in the LET event in Germany, the European Masters. Mr Kramski himself was there. I was struggling with my putter. He looked at it and showed me why - the putter I was using had got bent during travel, on the plane over.''
“I could not putt to save my life that week. I had a feeling something was wrong with it. But he did more than point out the problem with my putter - he gave me a lesson then did a deal with me so I wear his branded bag and caps but I get one of his putters. And the putter is really working. It is completely different to the putter I was used to but the end results speak for themselves.”
