Speculation over whether Donald Trump would attend the US Women’s Open was ended on Friday, when the President made a fleeting appearance at the tournament, held at Trump National, in Bedminster.
He was met by cheers from the crowd as he stood behind bulletproof glass watching proceedings on the fifteenth green for over an hour.
Lexi Thompson, Stacy Lewis and Brooke Henderson were in the first group that passed through after Trump arrived, and while many of the players appeared excited to be watching history unfold, he is the first sitting President to have attended the event, Thompson admitted, ‘Honestly, I was just trying to focus on my shot.’
Among those who caught a glimpse of the president was Shanshan Feng, who defied tough conditions to carry over her first-round lead into the weekend.
Feng, whose swing mirrors her personality – carefree and whimsical – was more than up for the myriad of obstacles tossed at her. She did have the advantage of getting a good night sleep since she finished her round on Thursday and followed her opening-round 66 with a 70 to go into the weekend at eight-under par 136, two-strokes ahead of Amy Yang, Jeongeung Lee and 17-year-old amateur Hye-Jin Choi.
Seon Woo Bae is at 139 and Carlota Ciganda, who got up before dawn to hit three shots to finish off a 69, is at 140, tied with So Yeon Ryu and In Gee Chun. Marina Alex, a Jersey girl from 40 miles away, is at 141 with Brooke Henderson, Minjee Lee and Lydia Ko.
In a conversation the LPGA had with Gary Gilchrist, Feng’s longtime swing coach, he said her consistency is amazing considering she doesn’t practice. When Shanshan asked Gilchrist why he said that, he replied: “Because you don’t practice.” Her response was to burst out laughing and walk away. She knew he was right.
Charley Hull climbed up the leaderboard with a two-under par second round 72, which puts her in T14 heading into the weekend. She will be joined on Saturday by Catriona Matthew, and rising star Georgia Hall, who recorded her first top-ten LPGA finish last week at the LPGA Thornberry Classic.
Jodi Ewart Shadoff, Stephanie Meadow, Meghan MacLaren and amateur Leona Maguire were among those who missed the cut.
