For just the second time in her LPGA professional career, which spans 91 tournaments, Lydia Ko missed the 36-hole cut at an event.

Following a string of changes at the end of last year, which included sacking both her coach and caddie, and changing her equipment manufacturer, Ko has struggled to maintain the form which saw her propel herself into the world’s No. 1 position.

“I tried my best out there to hopefully put myself in better position going forward, but I can't do anything about it,” said a rueful Ko, who will no longer need her clubs this weekend at the KIA Classic.

Sitting at 2 under on the day through 15 holes, it looked like Ko was well on her way to making the cut. But her putter let her down over the last three holes, as she missed short putts at 16 and 17 and three-putted for bogey at No. 18 to finish at even-par 72.

Ariya Jutanugarn who has spent 34 consecutive weeks ranked as the No. 2 player in the world, has almost closed the gap on the New Zealander and would overtake her as the world's best player with a win at the ANA Inspiration next week.

American Cristie Kerr leads the LPGA event in Carlsbad by a shot from Mirim Lee and Mo Martin. Meanwhile England's Jodi Ewart Shadoff is looking for her first top ten finish of the season after a second round 67 shot her up into T8 position.
