Falmouth’s Katie Rule admitted she had to ‘use her imagination’ to win the weather-hit third round of the WPGA One Day Series at Three Rivers Golf Club.
Rule made a 700-mile round trip from Cornwall and beat the elements to card a three over par round of 77 after a delayed start at the Essex course.
On a day which produced some high scores due to the wind and rain, only amateur player Ellie Brown, from Norfolk, could match Rule with the pair tying at the top of the leaderboard,
But Ladies European Tour player Lydia Hall missed the event due to injury, so Rule made up ground with her victory and plans to take part in the remaining One Day rounds this year.
Rule, from Mullion Golf Club, admitted it was a tough day due to the conditions.
“I didn’t tee off until 3pm in the end, there was a four-hour rain delay,” she said. “And when we arrived, we didn’t even know if we were going to be playing. We kept looking outside and wondered if it’d happen. It did stop raining but it was very easy to shoot high. It was more the wind - someone told me there were 40-50mph gusts, Everyone would’ve found that difficult.''
“I didn’t get home until 4.30am! Me and my dad split the driving, but the M4 and M5 both had closures, picking up the win made the trip worthwhile though,” she said and confirmed her commitment to the event. I definitely want to play in all of them this year. It’s a priority competition for me,” she added.
