Lexi Thompson produced an inspired performance at the Kingsmill Championship to break the tournament scoring record on the way to earning her first victory since heartbreak at the ANA Inspiration.
The twenty-one-year-old skydived into the pro-am on Wednesday, a dramatic entrance that set the tone for what was to be a dominant performance.
Had anyone wondered whether the setback at the ANA Inspiration would affect her confidence or performance then it was answered definitively in Virginia. The hugely popular LPGA star closed with a 6-under-par 65, her fourth consecutive sub-70 round, to finish five shots ahead of In Gee Chun. Such was the strength of Lexi’s performance that the Korean was herself four shots clear of third placed Angela Stanford.
“Oh, it means the world to me. Annika has been a player I've always looked up to not only how she played on the course, but how she is off and how she gave back to the game,” Thompson said on breaking the tournament record which had previously been held by Annika Sorenstam.
“This is a huge honour. I wasn't focusing on that and I didn't actually know that until maybe last night.”
Lexi’s competitors were full of praise for the way she has handled herself in the aftermath of the rules farce at the ANA Inspiration.
“After ANA, she is still playing with a lot of confidence,” Rolex world No. 1 Lydia Ko said. “It’s hard to overcome those things, but it just shows what a champion she is and what a strong player she is. She deserved it.”
Ko managed to extend her reign as World No. 1 to 83 consecutive weeks after a top ten finish, but may well relinquish her top spot over the next few weeks after deciding to taking three weeks away from the game following the tournament.
