The stage is set for a thrilling final round of the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes tomorrow with England’s Georgia Hall just one stroke off the lead.
In calm conditions, overnight leader, Thailand’s Pornanong Phatlum, did not falter, shooting a third round 3-under-par 69, 13-under total, to stay one shot ahead of a chasing pack.
England’s Georgia Hall, playing with Phatlum, birdied the 18th hole in front of a delighted gallery for a matching 69 to finish on 12-under-par and with a guarantee to play with Phatlum for a consecutive day in tomorrow’s final pairing.
Compared with the first two days, Hall found today’s round difficult and said:
“My scorecard looks steady, but it was actually quite a battle. It was tough today, my rhythm was off and I had to make some good putts to make up for it, and luckily I did.”
But the 22-year-old from Bournemouth is looking forward to taking advantage of the home crowd and drawing on her experience from last year’s tournament at Kingsbarns when she tied third, playing in the final pairing with eventual winner In-Kyung Kim.
“I can’t believe how many people were out there today supporting me, it felt like hundreds and hundreds of people, cheering my name and wanting me to do well”, she said.
If Hall manages to claim the trophy, she will be the third British winner since the championship became a Major in 2001, following in the footsteps of Karen Stupples at Sunningdale in 2004 and Catriona Matthew at Royal Lytham in 2009.
There’s still a long way to go and it’s a very tightly packed leaderboad with former World No 1 So Yeon Ryu just one shot further back on 11-under-par, and Sung Hyun Park, Mamiko Higa and on-form Minjee Lee on 10-under.
