The world of golf is mourning the tragic loss of a promising twenty-two-year-old golfer and student. European Champion Celia Barquín Arozamena was found dead at Coldwater Golf Links in the city of Ames in Iowa this week.
According to police, the Spanish golfer, a student at Iowa State University, was found with several stab wounds to her head, neck and upper body, police say. Her body was discovered after police were called to investigate an unattended golf bag on the course early on Monday.
"It's still very troubling for something like this to happen in broad daylight in a community that is as safe as Ames is," commented Police Cmdr Geoff Huff at a news conference earlier this week.
A 22-year-old homeless man has been charged with first-degree murder and was ordered to be jailed on Tuesday.
Originally from Puente San Miguel in Spain, Celia Barquín has been studying in the US and was set to finish her degree in civil engineering this semester.
During her time in the states, the young athlete rose to prominence as a golfer, being named Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year and winning the European Ladies' Amateur championship in July. She also competed in the Youth Olympic Games in China earlier this year.
"Celia had an infectious smile, a bubbly personality and anyone fortunate enough to know her was blessed".
"Our Cyclone family mourns the tragic loss of Celia, a spectacular student-athlete and ISU ambassador," wrote ISU Athletics Director Jamie Pollard.
Players will honour Celia later this week at the Estrella Damm Mediterranean Ladies Open.
