When the Ricoh Women’s British Open heads to Kingsbarns from 3-6 August, it is Charley Hull who will lead the British charge, so what did she think after playing her first round on the Scottish links?
When the Ricoh Women’s British Open heads to Kingsbarns from 3-6 August, it is Charley Hull who will lead the British charge and last week she joined members of the press to play her first round on the spectacular Scottish links.
In fact this was Charley’s first outing since the ANA Inspiration, where she finished in a credible tied 14th place. It was touch and go that she would be able to compete in the first women’s major of the year due to a fracture to her right wrist, an injury that, unbeknown to her, she sustained five years ago while hitting balls on the range in the US. By resting and wearing a cast, the 21-year-old believes that her wrist has recovered and in golfing terms she explained,
“The bone was chipped, but now it’s like a divot that has been replaced.”
Unlike when Charley competed in the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Birkdale in 2014, when she described how she imagined a number of trees lining the fairways to help her play links golf, there will be no such thought process at Kingsbarns this summer.
“I’ve come to terms with links golf now, I don’t think about it as I’m now used to the different pressures of various golf courses.”
By the same token, a quality that many admire in the Englishwoman, she doesn’t think about too much at all, other than going out on a golf course and hitting the ball. Unlike some players, there won’t be a strategic game plan because as far as Charley is concerned,
“If you can hit it straight, you can play anywhere.”
On completion of 18 holes, Kingsbarns received the thumbs up from the young star. “It’s fantastic, every hole is different. I played ok, it was a bit cold out there today but I can’t wait to play it in the summer.”
Next stop for Charley is this week’s LPGA Volunteers of America Texas Shootout, although she is very disappointed that she’s missing out on a trip to Wembley for the Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko boxing match!
