Spain's Carlota Ciganda is no stranger to the winner’s circle after picking up her first win on the LPGA Tour at the LPGA KEB HanaBank Championship.
Ciganda (-13) shot a final round 68 that proved to be just enough to grab her second victory of the 2016 season as she defeated Austin Ernst, Sarah Jane Smith, Angela Stanford, Karine Icher and Jodi Ewart Shadoff by two-strokes at this year’s Citibanamex Lorena Ochoa Invitational Presented by Aeromexico and Delta.
She had four birdies, an eagle and two bogeys on the day to finish at 4-under, hitting 10 of 14 fairways.
Ciganda held a share of the first-round lead and coming from behind to win is not new for Ciganda having come from five-shots back to pick up her first win on the LPGA Tour in Korea.
“I am very happy to be here and to get my second victory, it’s wonderful to play here in Mexico and I honestly don’t have any words,” said Ciganda. “I love the golf course, the people, it’s an honor to be here. I’ve been playing really good all year long and to end this year with these two victories gives me a lot of confidence, I am very happy.”
American Austin Ernst was in position for her first victory of 2016, but her three birdies Sunday were offset by two bogeys, and her 1-under-par total for the day just wasn’t enough, as she finished runner-up.
It was her best finish of the year, but she was still upset at how the day ended up.
“Right now, I’m disappointed. I just didn’t play well enough to get it done,” she said. “I am just kind of frustrated with how I finished.”
