American Angela Stanford, aged 40, won her first major title when her 3-under 68 was enough to clinch the Evian Championship by one shot after Amy Olson made her first double-bogey of the tournament on the 18th.

Stanford, who last won an LPGA title in 2012, was busy signing autographs near the 18th green after carding a 12-under-par total of 272. When Olson missed a six-foot bogey putt to force a play-off, she was in disbelief that she had won. Tears flowed during TV interviews, especially when mention was made of her mother, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment.

It was a roller coaster final few holes for Stanford as from the 15th she went eagle-double bogey-birdie and her ball shaved the hole for birdie on the 18th. Stanford earned a $577,500 cheque for making her 14th career top-10 finish in majors a winning one.

Stanford is the first American to win a major since Danielle Kang's success at the 2017 Women's PGA Championship.

"I did a bunch of stupid stuff, but deep down I'm a fighter, I'm a grinder, and I've always been that," she said.

For Olsen, who was outright or joint leader all day, it was a heartbreaking and her final round 74 left her in a four-way tie for second place with fellow Americans Austin Ernst (68) and Mo Martin (70), and Sei Young Kim (72).

A second major of the season wasn't meant to be for England's Georgia Hall who shot a 3-over par 74, 6-under-par total, to finish tied 16th, whilst fellow Englishwoman Charley Hull was a shot further back on 5-under after a final round 1-under-par.
