The Masters is almost here! From player predictions to fascinating facts, here’s everything you need to know ahead of one of the most iconic weekends in golf.
A Tradition Unlike Any Other
Held annually at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, the Masters is one of the most prestigious events in golf. First played in 1934, the tournament is steeped in history and tradition. From the ceremonial opening tee shots to the famous Green Jacket awarded to the winner, the Masters is unlike any other golf tournament.
Who's Playing in This Year's Masters
From Major champions and golfing legends to Augusta rookies, the 96 players making up the field at the Masters represent the best of the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV Golf. Some of the names to watch this year include:
- Scottie Scheffler – The defending champion and current world number one aims to secure back-to-back victories.
- Rory McIlroy – Seeking to complete his career Grand Slam with a win at Augusta.
- Jon Rahm – The 2023 Masters champion is eager to reclaim the Green Jacket.
- Bryson DeChambeau – A powerful player from the LIV Golf roster, known for his long drives.
And if you were hoping to see Tiger Woods playing in the 2025 Masters, you’ll be disappointed. He’s still recovering from an operation on his Achilles in March (sigh).
The Par 3 Contest: A Cherished Tradition
Held annually on the Wednesday before the tournament, the Par 3 Contest is a fun and heartwarming prelude to the Masters (think toddlers wearing mini white overalls!).
Established in 1960, the event takes place on a nine-hole, par-27 course within Augusta National's grounds. It's a family-friendly affair with wives and kids often caddying for players.
The contest has witnessed numerous memorable moments, including a total of 112 holes-in-one, with a record nine aces in 2016. However, winning the Par 3 Contest comes with a peculiar superstition: No player has ever won both the Par 3 Contest and The Masters in the same year.
But the "curse" only adds to the excitement of the weekend’s festivities.
Five Quick-Fire Facts About The Masters
- The Green Jacket: Winners receive the iconic Masters Green Jacket, which must be returned to Augusta after a year (though they keep a replica).
- No Phones Allowed: Spectators, known as patrons, are not allowed to use mobile phones on the course.
