The 2015 Spanish International Senior Ladies Amateur Championship at La Manga Club next month is attracting a high-class international field who will play on the famous South Course on March 4-7.

Amanda Mayne and Debbie Richards, two members of England’s senior ladies’ team that were crowned European champions for the first time last summer, will join competitors from 12 different countries from across Europe.

Both competitions have attracted a maximum entry of 90 players from countries including France, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland and the Netherlands, as well as England, Scotland and Ireland and host country Spain.

Mayne, who plays off Scratch at Saltford GC near Bristol, and three-handicapper Richards, a member at Burhill GC, will have high hopes of more success in the singles, and they will be joined at La Manga Club by a strong English entry including fellow internationals Lindsey Shaw – a multiple Derbyshire county champion – Royal Ashdown Forest star Katherine Russell and ex-English Senior Women’s Strokeplay champion Roz Adams.

Gullane Ladies’ Lesley Johnston and Anne Ferguson, from Ogbourne Downs GC, will head the Scottish and Irish challenge but the Great Britain and Ireland contingent face strong competition from the rest of Europe in the 36-hole strokeplay tournament led by the Spanish trio of Maria Orueta and Macarena Campomanes – the lowest handicappers in the event who play off plus-one – and Maria Castillo.

Competition is set to be just as fierce in the pairs championship, with Richards and Russell and Mayne and her Finnish partner Anna Maria Lehtonen likely to be among the top contenders for honours after teaming up for the 36-hole event – 18 holes of strokeplay betterball on the first day and one round with a foursome format on the second.

La Manga Club’s South Course is the ideal venue for the seniors to put their skills to the test, with the highly-regarded layout having hosted numerous high-profile tournaments in the past including the Spanish Open five times and qualifying schools for both the European Tour and Ladies’ European Tour.
