Lifelong Manchester United supporter Rory McIlroy will team up with three of his footballing heroes at this year’s celebrity Pro-Am, at Wentworth Club on May 21 ahead of the BMW PGA Championship 2014.

Lifelong Manchester United supporter Rory McIlroy is already celebrating ahead of the BMW PGA Championship 2014, after it was confirmed that he will team up with three of his footballing heroes at this year’s celebrity Pro-Am, at Wentworth Club on Wednesday May 21.

The Northern Irishman, one of the most exciting talents in the game, will be putting up a united front alongside Red Devils legends Peter Schmeichel ,Teddy Sheringham and current Manchester United coach Phil Neville. All three of the footballers were part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s glorious Treble winning side of 1999.

For McIlroy, who won the US Open in 2011 and US PGA Championship in 2012, playing alongside the United trio is a dream come true, “I’m really looking forward to a round of golf with a few of my Man United heroes, Peter Schmeichel, Teddy Sheringham and Phillip Neville. I believe they have some silky golfing skills, too!” said McIlroy.

Swapping footballs and gloves for golf balls and clubs, the celebrity Pro-Am will present Schmeichel, Sheringham and Neville with a new sporting challenge; tackling Wentworth Club’s iconic West Course in front of thousands of fans.

Speaking ahead of the Pro-Am, Neville said: “What an opportunity, to play in the BMW PGA celebrity Pro-Am alongside Rory! We are all really looking forward to it. Peter, Teddy and I have all competed on the world stage, and we love our golf, but that won’t stop us feeling the nerves when we step up onto that first tee at Wentworth. It’s going to be a great day, and who better to have on our team, offering a few words of advice, than Rory McIlroy. I can’t wait!”

McIlroy and the Manchester United legends will be playing in the afternoon session at the BMW PGA celebrity Pro-Am, which gets underway at 13:00hrs on Wednesday (21 May).

WIN SIGNED SHIRTS!

To celebrate the collaboration and 60 years of the BMW PGA Championship, McIlroy and the three Manchester United greats have generously donated two signed shirts as a social media competition prize.

The competition will run from 13-19 May on Rory McIlroy’s and The European Tour’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts, as well as BMW UK’s @BMWPGA Twitter account.

A full list of teams playing in the BMW PGA Championship celebrity Pro-Am will be announced in due course.

Following Wednesday’s celebrity Pro-Am, McIlroy will aim to succeed defending BMW PGA Champion Matteo Manassero, bidding to add his name to an illustrious group of fellow Major winners who have captured the prestigious title, namely Tony Jacklin, Sir Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam and José María Olazábal.
