Brendan O’Carroll, the battleaxe matriarch in hit television comedy 'Mrs Brown’s Boys' is hoping to have the last laugh on the golf course when he tees off in The Celebrity Cup this summer.

O’Carroll will make his debut on the Irish team which takes on rivals England, Scotland and Wales in the star-studded tournament at Celtic Manor Resort in South Wales from July 4-6.

The Dublin-born comedian joins singers Brian McFadden and Keith Duffy on the Ireland team and will pit his wits against another comic actor and presenter, Rob Brydon, who has confirmed he will return to captain host nation Wales.

O’Carroll said: “I’m very excited to be invited to play in this tournament and I’m really looking forward to representing Ireland. The guys have told me a lot about how much fun it was last year. I love my golf but I’ll be getting in plenty of practice to make sure I don’t make a fool of myself in front of all those people.”

Brydon skippered Wales to third place in last year’s inaugural Celebrity Cup and the actor and presenter who is currently hosting quiz show The Guess List and starring with Steve Coogan in The Trip to Italy is looking forward to his return to the golfing fray.

Thousands of golf fans and celebrity spotters flocked to Celtic Manor to enjoy the first ever Celebrity Cup last May. Britain’s most popular TV presenters, Ant and Dec, also dropped in for fun-filled skills challenges and they stayed on for a star-studded gala dinner which raised £65,000 for charity.

Other stars confirmed for this year’s event at Celtic Manor include Kenny Logan who will defend the trophy alongside fellow rugby star Gavin Hastings for last year’s champions, Scotland.

Another rugby legend, Gareth Edwards, joins Brydon and TV presenter Gethin Jones in the Wales team while model and TV personality Jodie Kidd returns to the England fold.

More stars are signing up to compete in teams of six for the event, which promises a full family day out with an interactive retail village and the opportunity to get up close to watch the celebrities in action.
