Golf fans only knew that Marina Alex was retiring when an announcement was made sure the final day coverage of the CME Group Tour Championship

With much of the focus on Lexi Thompson and Ally Ewing on Sunday as they brought their LPGA Tour full time careers to a close, it came as a surprise that they weren't the only ones saying goodbye. Marina Alex, had only told those close to her of her intentions and it was only when an announcement was made during the TV coverage of the CME Group Tour Championship that the wider LPGA golf community and fans found out.

A six-under-par 66 to jump up the leaderboard to share of 12th place at 12-under-par was a fitting end to a 11 year career on the LPGA Tour.

A celebratory farewell

Surrounded by family, friends, and longtime supporters, Alex, a two-time LPGA Tour winner, reflected on the significance of the moment. "It’s been amazing - emotions, but great emotions," she said, emphasising the presence of key figures who have supported her journey, including her childhood coaches and her longtime sponsor, Golf4Her. The sponsor played a special role in creating custom T-shirts featuring highlights from her career, worn by supporters during her final round.

The outpouring of love and appreciation clearly touched Alex. "My college teammates, Tour friends, and even my best friends were all here to support me. It’s shocking and amazing and really makes you feel so blessed and loved."

Emotions on saying goodbye

Alex admitted the decision to retire was a difficult one. "It’s hard to say goodbye," she said. "This is a life I built for the last 11 years, and golf has been my life since I was a kid. Entering a new world and identity is great, but change is never easy."

She recounted the mixed emotions of her final round. "The first tee felt like business as usual," she said, but as she approached the 18th hole, the reality set in. "I thought, 'Oh man, this is the last drive I’m going to hit and the last shot and putt.'"

Although she hinted at possibly competing in future U.S. Opens, Alex made it clear that her regular playing days are behind her. "This chapter has closed, and I’m really thankful for it to end on such an exceptional note."

Leaving a legacy

Alex spoke candidly about the challenges of life on the Tour, acknowledging the bonds formed with fellow players. "There’s an unwritten bond so many of us have out here - through traveling, the hardship, the good and the bad. I wanted to tell them all in person that this was the end."

When asked about her legacy, Alex spoke about leading by example. "Just try and put your best foot forward and be as kind and relatable as you can. Treat fans, the Tour, sponsors, and staff with respect. I hope that’s the one thing I left behind."

She also took pride in persevering through tough times, particularly after a challenging 2022 season. "I’m proud of sticking it out probably a little longer than I mentally wanted to, if I’m being honest."

What’s next for Marina Alex?

As for the future, Alex said she’s ready to rest and recharge. "This job is hard emotionally, and I’m finally ready to hang that up and not live and die by the golf course," she said. While the specifics of her next chapter remain uncertain, she is looking forward to taking time to reflect and discover new opportunities.
