Shropshire County player Helen White lifted the inaugural Ludlow Ladies Scratch Bowl in fine style. This new event fills a huge void in the fixture list for ladies golf in the region.

Twenty five year old, four handicapper Helen, from Worfield Golf Club joined women from as far afield as Minchinhampton and Beau Desert to compete for the prestigious Ludlow Ladies Scratch Bowl.

The new event, held alongside the Men’s Scratch Open, fills a huge void in the fixture list for ladies golf as whilst there are plenty of Scratch competitions for men, there are no others for women in the entire region.

With the free draining course in excellent condition, the superfast greens, reading 10.5 on the stimp meter, took many of the visitors by surprise making scoring difficult for many.  However Helen, who has scored well at Ludlow in past County events,  shot a gross 76 some 5 shots clear of her playing partner and County team mate Vicky Bradbeer of Oswestry on 81 gross.  Taking the third spot was immediate past County Captain Ros Moor of Bridgnorth, just one shot behind with an 82.  After travelling two hours from Minchinhampton golf club, Frances Lindley took the nett prize with nett 75.

The tournament is another first for the Club in their 125th Anniversary year as the Ladies Scratch Bowl was presented by the first ever lady Club President, Edna Spanner and the first joint Club Captain Jacki Corbett.

The event was hailed a great success and many of this year’s entrants are hoping to secure a coveted place in next year’s competition.
