Women golfers have united across Great Britain and Ireland to fight breast cancer as the Ladies' Golf Union (LGU) presents Breakthrough Breast Cancer with an incredible donation of £500,000.
The LGU has partnered with Breakthrough Breast Cancer, the UK’s leading breast cancer charity dedicated to stopping women getting, and dying from, breast cancer, for over eight years. Over the years they have encouraged golf clubs across Great Britain and Ireland to support the charity through a variety of activities.
Trish Wilson, Chairman of Ladies’ Golf Union said, “We are thrilled to support Breakthrough and we would like to thank all of our members for their exceptional fundraising efforts. We are very proud to have raised over £500,000 for ground-breaking breast cancer research and we hope this will contribute to making the ultimate breakthrough happen a lot faster. Unfortunately, breast cancer has touched the lives of many of our lady golfers and their families. We hope to continue this successful partnership in the future.”
Over half a million pounds has been raised by the LGU through the sale of charity pins, pink dinners, ladies’ golf tournaments and the LGU Breakthrough Brooch, which is available to affiliated golf clubs for presentation to the player with the best net score in a strokeplay competition.
Champion golfer and Breakthrough Breast Cancer Ambassador, Catriona Matthew added, “Breakthrough Breast Cancer is a charity close to my heart due to my aunt losing her battle with the disease at a young age. As one of the most common cancers in the UK, Breakthrough need as much support as ever to make sure we can put a stop to breast cancer for good. Congratulations to the LGU for their support of this fantastic charity.”
James Jopling, Director of Breakthrough Breast Cancer Scotland, thanked the LGU for their continued support and generosity. He said: “We are delighted and privileged to have such a fantastic partnership with the LGU. Through their support we’ve found new ways to diagnose breast cancer earlier, developed new treatments and saved more lives through our pioneering research.”
