Women and girls from golf clubs across Great Britain and Ireland can secure a place at the ‘Home of Golf’ and go on to rub shoulders with stars of the sport by entering the 2019 Coronation Foursomes.

The Coronation Foursomes is the largest domestic golf participation event for women and girls in Great Britain and Ireland, with over 25,000 golfers from 1,100 clubs taking part in 2018. It forms part of The R&A’s drive to encourage more women and girls into playing golf and is renowned for its camaraderie, companionship and friendly competition.

This year’s event culminates in St Andrews with 32 finalists playing in the Grand Final at the Eden Course on 9 September, with the winners earning a place in the 2020 AIG Women’s British Open Pro-Am at Royal Toon where they will play alongside the sport’s biggest names. 

Duncan Weir, Executive Director, Golf Development and Amateur Events at The R&A, said, “The Coronation Foursomes is a popular event for thousands of women and girls to enjoy playing golf with their friends and family.”

“We are working hard to make golf more accessible and appealing for women and girls of all ages and abilities and events like the Coronation Foursomes offer them opportunities to socialise, build new friendships and enjoy competitive golf in a relaxed environment.”

Any club affiliated to a home nation can run a qualifying round, played over 18 holes of foursomes stableford.

The best 100 scores will then qualify for the Area Finals, held at 16 venues around Great Britain and Ireland. The winning teams at each venue will book their trip to the showpiece finale at the Eden Course in St Andrews, including two nights at the prestigious Old Course Hotel Golf Resort & Spa.

Last year, Northamptonshire pair Ann Lester and Christina Hancock sealed a memorable victory over the Eden layout.

The Whittlebury Park Golf Club team shone in the autumnal sun to post a winning score of 38 points in the handicap stableford foursomes format, with Norma Hughes and Julia Line from Llanymynech Golf Club on the English-Welsh border finishing in second place.

Hancock said, “We were absolutely delighted and completed stunned to win. We had the most wonderful time and enjoyed it so much. It was a privilege actually, we felt like winners just getting to St Andrews to be honest.”

“We were thrilled to experience the ‘Home of Golf’ for ourselves for the first time after watching it so many times on the TV. Meeting all of our fellow competitors was also so nice.”

Established in 1953 to celebrate the Queen’s Coronation, the team event is open to all members of affiliated golf clubs in Great Britain and Ireland who hold a current CONGU handicap of 36 or under.

Qualifying rounds for this year’s event can be held up until the 20 June 2019 closing date and entries submitted online.

The Eden Course is one of seven courses at St Andrews Links. Opened in 1914, the Eden Course was designed by Harry S Colt and is named after the Eden estuary.
