Golfing enthusiasts across the UK flocked to the fairways last Thursday for Macmillan Cancer Support’s Longest Day Golf Challenge.
Taking on four rounds of golf on the hottest day in 176 years, contestants completed 72 holes, took some 300 shots and covered a good 20 miles as they raised money for people living with cancer.
With one round of golf taking approximately four hours to play, challengers played from sunrise (4.45am) through to sunset (21.21pm), using every minute of daylight available to them on the longest day of the year.
Elizabeth Connare, Marketing Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, says:
“Playing four rounds of golf out in this heat I think we can safely say there’s nothing fairweather about our golfing supporters! I’d like to wish everyone taking part in our Longest Day Golf Challenge lots of luck today. Enjoy yourselves and keep the water and suncream flowing.”
The four teams that have raised the most sponsorship money by the 4th September 2017 will qualify for the finals of the Longest Day Golf Challenge which will take place at Boavista Golf Resort on the Algarve in Portugal on 13th – 15th October 2017.
Over 3,500 teams signed up to take part this year. Last year’s event saw over 3,000 teams tee off, raising over £1.5million for Macmillan Cancer Support. The charity provides practical, emotional and personal support to people affected by cancer, supporting them during treatment, helping with work and money worries, and listening when people need to talk.
